Geometry Begins!

The most anticipated unit has begun! Geometry.  I took Geometry in high school and all I remembered were theorems and that I passed with a B. To begin this unit we went over how to use a protractor. Which to be honest, I didn't know how to use properly, and I'm so glad we went over it. In class, we used the physical protractor and measured some angles. If you haven't seen a protractor, it's basically half a circle as a degree ruler. As our assigned homework, we were directed to a website where we practiced measuring online and we wrote down our answers.
I like the online activity it was good practicing over and over. If you were to teach this  It will definitely be best to start with the actual protractor at hand. Right after the online assignment, we had an angles worksheet where we measure the angles and was a good follow up to the online assignment. Also we did this activity after going over the types of angles there are such as acute, obtuse and many more. This definitely helps make sense when using a protractor!

  1. HI Ana,

Love your blog title! Math and I also have a complicated relationship. Sometimes I love it and sometimes it makes me cry. I agree with you! I've been really nervous about this unit. I struggled with math in high school, and I especially struggled when it came to geometry. I think this activity was a great way to begin the unit because many of us already knew how to measure angles or were familiar with it in one way or another. I felt like I began the unit with confidence. I also liked how we learned how to properly use a protractor. I never really felt confident about the way I read it. Often times I would end up being off. The online tool that went along with this was especially helpful, I love all the interactive tools that can be incorporated in geometry.

  2. Hello,
I totally agree about the protractor thing. A lot of teachers just assume we know how to use them but many of us don’t. I liked the activity because I feel like it really helped you figure out how to us it and it told you if it was correct or not. I did also like the worksheet because it gave your hands-on experience with using the protractor. It is also important to make sure that they know they can extend the line otherwise they will be guessing and likely getting it wrong.

  3. Hi Ana,

I had forgotten how to use a protractor and I was really nervous when we started geometry. I still am, but I'm not giving up! I did this in-class assignment and also the website where we had to play a game using a protractor. I kept trying until I got enough of them right. This boosted my confidence a little. Math is something that I have always struggled with, but I try to have a positive mindset even if I am depressed and ready to give up. Your blog looks great!

    Thank you,
    Sammi
