"Live or Die: The King's Dilemma" is a discussion question that was assigned for us to solve at home. I struggled with the problem and I was confused, which meant I already didn't like it. However, with a little help from someone, I was able to find the answer which really didn't seem as complicated. Just in case you want to solve it, I won't give away the answer but the question read: "You are a prisoner sentenced to death. The King offers you a chance to live by playing a simple game. He gives you 50 red marbles, 50 white marbles and 2 empty bowls. He then says, "Divide these 100 marbles into these 2 bowls. You can divide them any way you like as long as you use all the marbles. Then I will blindfold you and mix the bowls around. You then can choose one bowl and remove ONE marble. If the marble is WHITE you will live, but if the marble is RED... you will die." How do you divide the marbles up so that you have the greatest probability of choosing a WHITE marble?".
The thing I liked about this assignment was that it was assigned to a discussion board. Once posting an answer, all the other student's answer were available. By doing this, we could see how other's solved the problem and how they explained it as well. I would go and read some other responses and I would see someone explained what I was trying to say but in a better way! Which is fine because now I know how to solve the problem in different ways. Teachers can assign a problem like this and have a whole class discussion, which I think would get the students interest going. Such a confusing problem but it was worth the headache!
A peek of me trying to solve this. 😖 |
